ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Robertsdale seniors scared up a good time on Halloween Thursday, Oct. 31 at the George P. Thames Adult Activity Center in Robertsdale.
The Center was decorated in orange and black and seven brave souls participated in a costume contest. Winners were Jean Fontaine, first place; Eddie Joan Bedwell, second; and Ann Brun, third.
Lunch consisted of worms and brains (spaghetti and meatballs), stuffed bats and ghoulish ghosts (calzones), mummies (garlic bread with string cheese and black olives for eyes), brain matter (pumpkin dip with graham crackers), devil’s stones (deviled eggs), a graveyard for dessert (cake crumbled to look like dirt with cookies shaped like gravestones), and witches brew (red punch).
The George P. Thames Adult Activity Center hosts daily, weekly and monthly events for men and women over age 50 at 22651 E. Chicago St., in Robertsdale or at the PZK Hall, 17933 Alabama 104, Robertsdale. The Center will present a program to honor veterans beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 at the PZK Hall, 17833 Alabama 104, Robertsdale.
Guest speakers for the event will include Dawn Biggs, volunteer coordinator with the city of Daphne, who will address guests about a program called Retired Senior Veterans Program, which is in the process of setting up locations throughout the area to film interviews with local veterans. There will also be a veteran speaker, Leon McGhee, presented by American Legion Post 99 in Foley.
Veterans of all branches of military service will be honored. Pins will be presented by Bob Bunton with American Legion Post 99 and Sissy Cunningham with Alabama Hospice.
Lunch will be served following the ceremony.
There will be a display of photos, certificates, awards, medals, etc. There will also be a slide show display featuring local veterans. If you would like to include items, contact the center at 251-947-8973.
A Nite Out will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at the PZK Hall.
Admission is $10 at the door, includes live entertainment and dancing.
Bring your own snacks and your favorite beverage.
The Center is also selling raffle tickets for a queen-sized quilt, made by Paul Knoch. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.
