ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The city of Robertsdale’s annual summer camps will likely start in July, said Mayor Charles Murphy.

“The good news is that we’ve been working on a plan for the last six weeks,” Murphy said. “It’s going to happen, it will just be later than normal.”

Murphy said tutoring camps are already filled to capacity and will begin on schedule after Memorial Day, adding that he has been in communication with Robertsdale High School Athletic Director Kyle Stanford about hosting the summer sports camps.

“Right now we’re just waiting to hear from the governor to modify the social gatherings order and we’ll be good to go,” Murphy said. While no set dates have been determined as yet for the camps, Murphy said it will most likely be in July.

Every year, the city hosts sports camps featuring coaches from RHS at various venues throughout the city.

Camps include a boys’ and girls’ basketball camp, boys’ baseball camp, boys’ and girls’ soccer camps, softball camps, a dance camp, a cheerleading camp and offensive and defensive football skills camps.

The city also hosts a series of reading and science camps in the library at Robertsdale Elementary School each year.

Murphy said he has also been in communication with Robertsdale Library Director Cynthia Nall about having a modified Summer Reading Program, which will also likely happen in July. Traditionally the Summer Reading Program starts the first week of June and runs throughout the month.

The library opened on May 11 and is back operating under regular hours, Murphy said. Municipal court is also scheduled to open back up on May 27 under modified rules.

“Everything still must comply with social gathering rules, limited capacity and spacing,” Murphy said. “The only thing we haven’t opened back is senior citizens’ activities. The staff is still providing services for older residents and is participating with the Catholic Social Services meal delivery program.”

The council held a brief meeting on Monday, May 18 in which they:

Granted a one-year extension with TFR Enterprises Inc. for disaster debris removal and disposal services. A two-year contract was executed in July 2018 with a stipulation that the city could vote to extend the contract 30 days prior to the end of the contract, which was set to expire July 13.

Approved the purchase of property located south of the Adult Activity Center on East Chicago Street at a cost of $20,000.

Approved the surplus of two Ford Interceptors with the Robertsdale Police Department. Chief Brad Kendrick said the two vehicles have already been replaced.

Announced that the city will once again participate in the Sales Tax Holiday for school supplies, July 17-19. A few years ago, the council set up a resolution automatically approving the annual tax holiday for the third weekend in July.
