Silverhill considering agreement with Point Broadband

SILVERHILL, Alabama — The Silverhill Town Council is the next municipality to consider an agreement with Point Broadband to provide internet service.

Sherry Sullivan with Point Broadband addressed the council at its meeting on Tuesday, May 16, asking officials to consider a contract to place equipment on the town’s water tower.

The town will also be able to provide two free hot spots for wireless internet service, Sullivan said, which could include the Silverhill Community Center, Oscar Johnson Park or Oscar Johnson Memorial Library, officials said.

At meetings held last week, Loxley and Summerdale became the latest municipalities to sign agreements with the internet service provider, agreeing to 10-year contracts.

In April, Todd Holt, CEO of Point Broadband and ITC Holdings, told Gulf Coast Media that the company is expecting to access about 25 towers in Baldwin County over the next four weeks.

In addition, Holt said, they are looking at Bay Minette, Fairhope, Daphne, Robertsdale and Elberta. Holt said the company had a mid-June timeframe for launching service and signing up customers.

In other business at the May 16 meeting, officials announced that a furniture store would be occupying the former Dollar General Store space on Main Street (Silverhill Avenue).

Troy Barrett, owner of Riviera Furniture, met with council members to discuss the removal of trees in an alleyway between the building and the adjacent Silverhill Animal Clinic.

Barrett said the business would be renamed and could be open as early as 60 days, but it could take up to 120 days for them to make the necessary improvements for opening.

“We’re not sure yet what it will be called,” he said, “but it will not be named Riviera Furniture.”

Dollar General built a larger store on the corner of Silverhill Avenue and East Boulevard in February.

The council also voted to adopt a resolution to surplus a Mercedes-Benz for the police department. The council voted in April to surplus the vehicle, which was donated to raise funds for the police department.

Police Chief Kevin Brock said he estimated the vehicle to be worth between $11,000 and $12,000.

The department recently received a donation to purchase a K-9 officer for the department and announced the hiring of two additional officers, Kayla Machefsky and Lance Morgan.

According to the Silverhill Police Department’s Facebook page, Morgan is a 12-year veteran of law enforcement and Machefsky will be attending the Police Academy in July.

Sgt. Michael Taylor, who is also SPD’s chief investigator, will serve as partner for the department’s new K-9 officer.
