LOXLEY, Alabama -- A pair of sisters were arrested on drug trafficking charges after Baldwin County Sheriff Deputies say they found over 2 ½ pounds of heroin in their vehicle during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 10 Tuesday.
Zonia Esmeralda Allen, 37, of Deer Park, Texas, and Iris Azucena Garcia, 38, of Houston, are both being held at the Baldwin County Corrections Center on $300,000 bond.
According to a release issued Wednesday by the BCSO investigations command, deputies stopped a blue 2018 Kia Optima on east bound I-10 at Alabama 59.
During the stop deputies learned that Allen and Garcia were enroute to Jacksonville, Florida, to visit a friend. During the vehicle stop, after the sisters provided several conflicting stories, probable cause was developed and a search of the vehicle was initiated.
While conducting the search a Milwaukee brand drill bag was found in the spare tire well. When opened it contained two brown taped bundles of suspected narcotics. Both suspects were taken into custody after a field test was performed on the substance and it resulted in a positive presumptive test result for heroin. The approximate weight was 2 pounds, 9 ounces.
This is the third drug bust reported on Interstate 10 by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office already this year.
In January, deputies seized approximately 160 pounds of high-grade marijuana and arrested three suspects during a routine traffic stop near the Wilcox Exit.
Victor Ivan Flores-Vasquez, 22, of Chaparral, New Mexico, and Adrian Francisco Perez, 24, of El Paso, Texas, remain in jail on a $300,000 bond on drug trafficking charges; Jose Ramone Guevara-Lopez, 25, of Sunland Park, New Mexico, was additionally charged with possession of a concealed weapon without a permit and is in jail on a $300,500 bond.
Last week, a California man was arrested and charged with trafficking methamphetamine, along with possession and resisting arrest, after a routine traffic stop netted 11 ½ pounds of ICE.
Jonathan Diaz, 21, of Anaheim, California, remains in jail on a $302,500 bond, charged with drug trafficking, possession of marijuana, second degree, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.
