Toros shutout Saints in California Dreaming Bowl for fifth region win

SPANISH FORT – The Toros remain one of the hottest teams in 6A play with a 22-0 home-field shutout over region rival St. Paul’s. The Toros are now 6-0 in the annual California Dreaming Bowl series and are keeping the trophy for another year thanks to their stout defense and reliable offense.

SFHS quarterback Jackson Burkhalter threw for 12 completions out of 15 attempts for 128 yards and a touchdown, which was a 30-yard pass to Kaleb Purdie. Kris Abrams-Draine continued to be an impactful player for SFHS with eight receptions for 72 yards as well as 106 total yards. He also tossed a 31-yard trick pass to Zavier Love. Mike Franklin ran the ball 13 times for 120 yards. Kicker Matt Quinn made two field-goals from 44 and 46 yards.

The Toros offensive line was efficient with only two sacks allowed from a tough Saints’ defense. Spanish Fort senior offensive linemen Christopher Turberville said the Saints’ defense was one of the better units he and his teammates have faced.

“They're very well disciplined, make very few mistakes,” he said. “So, we had to play the same way and out physical them.”

Turberville and SFHS cornerback D.J. James have been invited to play in the annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game.

Defensively, the Toros suffocated the offense of St. Paul’s by holding them to 144 total yards and 17 rushing yards. The Toros defense had five total sacks. Montaj Cooks had two sacks and two tackles for loss and teammate Carlos Johnson had four total tackles, two sacks and two tackles for loss. Sam Hoover totaled six tackles with three tackles for loss. Luke DeWeese had four total tackles and a tackle for a safety late in the fourth quarter.

The Spanish Fort improved to 5-1 overall and remained undefeated (5-0) in Class 6A Region 1 travels to face the Baldwin County High School Tigers (3-3) Friday night. The Saints (4-2) will host Saraland’s No. 4 Spartans (7-0), the only other undefeated team in Region 1 this Friday night. The Spartans and Toros are set to meet in their final regular-season game (Nov. 2) at Saraland.
