• The Toros win seventh straight game, go 6-0 in league play

SARALAND, Ala. — The Spanish Fort Toros (7-1 overall, 6-0 in region play), control their own destiny after a dominating 34-7 win over the Spartans (6-3) at Saraland High Friday. In the highly-anticipated game of the week, the Toros and Spartans delivered their best shots until the Toros completely took over in the second quarter.

The Toros struck first in the game with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Jack Samsel to Kris Abrams-Draine with 5:44 left in the opening quarter.

The Spartans came back with a score driving of their own with 15, 17, 24 yard runs by Jonathan Chaney to set up an accurate eight-yard slant-route touchdown pass from Jack West to Jakyrus Williams.

From there, the Spanish Fort defense completely dominated the Spartans for the remaining of the game. Saraland Head Coach Jeff Kelly wanted to take more risks to throw this Spanish Fort defense off but SFHS defensive coordinator Tony Stonicher and the Toros were prepared. The Spartans offense had two turnovers on downs thanks to a good read by the Toros’ Brennan Sharp. Brennan also recovered an onside kick late in the first quarter that the Spartans also tried.

The Toros’ defensive back Desmond James is credited for Spanish Fort’s only forced turnover against the Spartans. Peyton Tyson and Sharp accounted for seven solo tackles each.

Outside of the 24-yard run from Chaney, the Toros did not allow a big play over 20 yards through the remainder of the game. The Toros defense only allowed 270 total yards from Saraland.

Offensively, the Toros were in-sync in multiple areas throughout the field. Toros quarterback Jack Samsel finished the night with 14 completions (out of 20 attempts) for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

WR Kris Abrams-Draine was the recipient of those two touchdowns and had six receptions for 98 yards. Conner Hegan rushed for 130 yards on 14 carries and RB Dayton Reeder rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. The Toros offense accounted for 417 total yards.

The Toros (7-1) will host the B.C. Rain Raiders (2-7) next Friday while Saraland has a bye-week.
