Staff Report
SUMMERDALE - The Summerdale Fire Department offered some fire education on Wed., Oct. 23 when they spent a day at the Summerdale School, teaching kids in grades K4-8th the importance of fire prevention and safety. October is Fire Prevention Month, and the volunteers at Summerdale Fire Department wanted to take the opportunity to reach out to the children in the community to introduce them to their local volunteers and drop some knowledge that will benefit them for years to come. The volunteers showed the children a fully uniformed firefighter so that they would not be afraid if they saw them out in the community, familiarized them with a fire engine and the tools used in fires and accidents, explained to them to have an escape plan and meeting place in the event of a house fire, and encouraged them to remind their parents to change smoke alarm batteries at least once a month.
Participating firefighters for the day were Chief Woody Kicklighter, Captain Leroy Marquez, Lieutenant Ed Wheeler, Safety Officer Kenny Johnson, Firefighter Tiffany Givens and Firefighter Derek Cutts. The volunteer firefighters send a special thanks to the Summerdale School staff, especially Coach Virginia Bodden and Coach Joey Cameron, for the welcomed hospitality and help.
