Summerdale seeking tap grant for sidewalk projects

SUMMERDALE - During the March council meeting, the Town of Summerdale adopted a resolution to secure the services of Civil Southeast, LLC to help obtain a tap grant from ALDOT. If the tap grant is received, Civil Southeast will then proceed with sidewalk projects throughout the community.

“With the tap grant program, you want to provide some sort of transportation alternative for connectivity,” said Alan Killen, civil engineer with Civil Southeast. “Whether it be a library to a school to a park, you need connectivity. So we scoped each road as its own project, and our recommendation to the council would be to pick whatever road you feel works best for the town.”

The town council has been reviewing the plans brought before them by Killen. A meeting at a later date is in the works for the group to fully discuss what the town believes would be best for the area. The tap program is an 80/20 matching grant, with the town’s match being spread out over the next few years. The town is planning to apply for a $400,000 grant.

“With the $400,000 grant, that would include West Lee Street, 2nd Street, Hamm Avenue, and then Northwest 1st Street going out to the new Miracle League Field,” Killen said. “I feel this is a solid project because we’re connecting the Municipal Complex, Summerdale ballfields, Summerdale Fire Department, the Literacy Center, the new tennis courts, and the new Miracle League Field. You’re getting a lot of big-ticket items there.”

Going forward, the town and Civil Southeast will hammer down a detailed outline of the project the town wants to apply for. Once that’s completed, Civil Southeast will provide a detailed cost estimate of the project. Other projects are being discussed in the event the project comes back under bid price. Plans are due on May 15.
