FOLEY – Tanger Outlets Foley presented a donation check worth $10,854.64 to Guardians of the Ribbon, which benefits local families in their fight against cancer, on Jan. 20 at the Center Courtyard. The funds were raised throughout the month of October 2017 as part of the 24th annual Tanger PINK Campaign. Thanks to the campaign, Tanger has contributed more than $17 million to breast cancer research through the PINK Campaign, 5K races, on-site events and other breast cancer-related fundraising initiatives across the U.S.
“Thank you guys for helping, we appreciate it,” said Tanger General Manager Debra Brown. “The funds raised are for local families, to assist them with their needs during their fight, whatever it might be. And that’s why we’ve chosen Guardians, because that’s what they do, and for the love and support they provide to our local families.”
Secretary/Treasurer for Guardians of the Ribbon, Lower Alabama Chapter, Eddie McDonald accepted the check for the organization.
Guardians of the Ribbon are dedicated to spreading the “Cares Enough to Wear Pink” Campaign, and they help raise awareness for all women and their families in their fight against cancer of any kind. The organization is currently expanding, with a chapter recently opening in Mexico and another opening in Canada.
With the money that they raise through fundraisers and donations, Guardians will lend assistance to women in the area who are battling cancer and need help. When people reach the point where medical bills have become so expensive that paying the electricity bill has become difficult, Guardians is there to help. All they require is a copy of the requester’s HIPAA report to determine that they do have cancer and to know what kind of cancer they are fighting against, and they are ready to lend aid.
The Guardians, dressed in pink fire suits and travelling in pink vehicles, will drive across the country every year to raise awareness, and they participate in various non-profit events at no charge to the organization. They will even go to the home of someone who is battling cancer and present them with a special pink bear, Pinky, which is specifically associated with the Lower Alabama Chapter.
“We’ll present them with Pinky, and give them a hug,” said McDonald. “Tell them, ‘I don’t have to know you to love you, I don’t have to know you to care. I care.’ Then we’ll let them sign the fire truck.”
The Guardians’ trademark pink fire truck is named Cindy, and their pink police vehicle is Shelby. They have been named in honor of real people who have fought the battle against cancer. The signatures of others who have fought cancer, some who have won and others who have not, join the rolling memorial, and the Guardians state: “We encourage each of you to view this memorial and read the names listed upon it. … We ask that you take the time to help those that you know who are fighting the fight by doing an act of kindness, however small, that will make their life easier during their times of struggling.”
