The sun sets on the 48th Annual Shrimp Festival

Posted

The final sunset has fallen over the 48th Annual National Shrimp Festival. Vendors have packed up their wares and headed on to the next event while the public works department and organizers have returned Gulf Place Town Green to pristine condition.

National Shrimp Festival organizers had a few challenges to overcome this year. The last minute cancellation by B.R.A.T.S. as the shuttle provider created an opportunity for the Gulf Shores City Schools to step in and raise money. The Dolphin Athletic Club and the marching band volunteers worked the shuttle stations and those organizations will receive money for their efforts.

Weather created some issues after heavy rains rolled through late Friday and early Saturday. Organizers postponed the start of the festival to ensure the grounds were safe due to water pooling around electrical connections. Some vendor tents suffered damage from wind and rain. Once the grounds were declared safe, vendors busied themselves with getting their tents set up and open as the crowds trickled in. By noon the sun was out, and the crowds were thick.

You can go ahead and start making plans for next year. The 49th Annual Shrimp Festival dates are Oct. 8 – 11. For more information on the Annual Shrimp Festival or how you can get involved visit www.myshrimpfest.com. The event is run by volunteers and more help is always needed.
