SPANISH FORT, Ala. - The Toros trailed the Leopards 14-10 at the half. But in the third and fourth quarters. Spanish Fort’s offense added the go-ahead points while the defense got the stops needed to stay on the playoff track..

Spanish Fort head coach Ben Blackmon said it took a combined effort by his offense, defense and special teams.

“We knew it was going to be a four-quarter fight to the end,” he said. “And hats off to coach (Lev) Holly and his kids. They played with incredible heart tonight. But it came down to the second half and really proud of how our kids battled and kept after it. They made plays when they had to. I’m proud to be their coach.”

Blackmon added that Class 6A Region 1 is the most competitive in the state with quarterfinal and semifinal contests featuring teams from the same region.

“And this is definitely the best region in the state of Alabama in 6A football. No doubt about that.  It’s a juggernaut each year. And there won’t be a problem getting up for Saraland and they will be up, too. You don’t have to worry about that. Our guys, Saraland guys will be ready to compete and you will have an excellent football game Friday night.”

A 4-yard touchdown run by Jacob Godfrey capped the go-ahead 17-14 score for SFHS in the third quarter. Logan Ganey then scooped up a lateral pass by Blount that set the Toros up at the Leopard’s one. On third-and-goal SF quarterback Brendon Byrd then punched in the final touchdown of the night.

Earlier, Byrd tossed a 64-yard TD pass to Mario Montgomery and Lucas Breuax hit a 37-yard field goal for SFHS in the first quarter for the opening lead.

Troy University commit Jarris Williams led the Leopards with scores from 67 and 10 yards. Blount finished its 2020 run at 8-5.

The No. 7 Toros improved to 10-3 and face fifth-ranked Saraland (11-2) for the second time this season. Spanish Fort took the regular season region win 24-21 at Spartan Field. SHS advanced with a 46-27 win over Opelika.
