Toro’s Von Seibert commits to Tide

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Spanish Fort sophomore Von Siebert has accepted a scholarship offer to the University of Alabama. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound right-hander, who bats left, committed to the Crimson Tide during a recent baseball visit.

Spanish Fort coach Brent Boyd, a former Alabama player, confirmed the information.

"First, I’m just really happy for Von and his family,” Boyd said. “They all went through a lot last year after he got hurt.”

Seibert made the 2016 team as a freshman but an early-season knee injury forced him to sit out the season.

“After all that he came out this year, rededicated himself to the game and has really done some amazing things already. So I’m really proud of him. He’s a talented player at the plate and on the field.”

Playing first base Seibert has been hitting near .500 with a .473 average as of March 24 with three home runs, a triple, six doubles and 30 RBIs. He has scored 15 runs.

Seibert said the Alabama staff likes his size and reach at first base but could see him at third and possibly as a relief pitcher.

“But mostly they liked my bat and RBIs,” he said. “They said I might need to pitch some or play third and that’s great, too. I really liked everything about it there. I really am glad coach Boyd helped me get to this point.”

The Toros (19-2 overall, 4-0 in Area 2) are ranked No. 2 in Class 6A by the Alabama Sports Writers Association and No. 21 nationally in MaxPreps. SFHS had won 12 straight before visiting Baldwin County High took a 1-0 Area 2, tie-break win Friday night. Their first loss of the year was to Theodore on March 4.

Seibert has also been working on the mound, mostly as a closer. He has three saves and is 1-0 in wins overall. He has walked three and struck out six in 5.1 innings pitched.

The Toros are scheduled to play in the Hoover High School Buccaneer Classic in Hoover beginning today with Calera (at 2 p.m.), and then reset to play Hoover at 7 p.m.
