Town Council pledges $1,000 to help with Founders Day celebration

LOXLEY, Alabama — Next month, the town of Loxley will celebrate Founders Day, the culmination of a year-long celebration as part of Alabama 200, in honor of the state of Alabama’s bicentennial celebration.

On Monday, Oct. 14, the Loxley Town Council voted to pledge $1,000 to help with any expenses that might be incurred with the celebration.

“We’re doing everything to make this the best celebration possible for the community and for the state,” said Loxley Bicentennial Committee Chairwoman Joan Richardson.

Founders Day, or John Loxley Day, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Loxley Civic Center, 4198 Municipal Park Drive, and will honor local families and share their stories.

The event will feature history displays, book signings from Alabama authors, an AL200 quilt display, Children’s Village with activities, food trucks, face painting and live music, featuring Jimmy Lee Hannaford from 2 to 4 p.m.

Descendants of John Loxley will also be featured during the celebration.

In other business on Oct. 14, the council:

•Approved the 2019-20 financial contribution to the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance at a cost of $2,500.

•Contributed to the Robertsdale High School gym floor fundraising campaign in the amount of $500.

•Approved the purchase of sound equipment from Home Theater Experience for the town hall auditorium at a cost of $4,017.06.

•Approved the purchase of carpet for the town hall auditorium, along with the purchase and installation of carpet for the council stage at town hall at a cost of $6,998.76.

•Tabled a measure to appoint three members to the Downtown Redevelopment Board. The appointments will be discussed at the Council’s work session on Oct. 28.

•Adopted a resolution to enter into an agreement with North Baldwin Utilities in which each Utility would provide backup water service for the other in the event of an emergency.

•Adopted a resolution assessing the cost of providing grass and weed cutting service at a home, the cost of which will be charged to the owner of the property in the amount of $60.

•Contracted for legal services with Balch & Bingham LLP of Birmingham to review legal issues regarding a Series 2019 Sewer Revenue Bond in the amount of $4,825,000 with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

•Approved a tri-party agreement with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and the Baldwin County Commission for the housing of prisoners at the Baldwin County Corrections Center in Bay Minette.

•Contracted for engineering services with Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood Inc., for County Road 49 traffic study and pavement evaluation at a total cost of $22,000.

•Approved a landscape project on Cedar Street at a cost of $29,238.

•Approved the purchase of chlorination equipment from Aqua Products Inc. for the town’s Utilities Department at a total cost of $5,800.

•Changed the town’s next regular meeting from Nov. 11 to Nov. 25 because of Veterans Day. The council will hold its regularly scheduled work session beginning at 6 p.m., immediately followed by the regular meeting.
