Virginia Byrne Irby Ponder died peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019. She was born Feb. 1, 1939 to William Bibb and Gasque Lee Irby.
She is survived by her children, Paige Ponder Monaghan (Andrew) and Michael Nelson Ponder Jr. (Regina); three grandchildren; her brother, Sam W. Irby (Ginger); and many friends.
Virginia was a graduate of Fairhope High School and then attended Auburn University. She then received her master's in medical social work from the University of Alabama.
She was honored for her work as Mobile's Social Worker of the Year in 1990.
Virginia enjoyed sailing, traveling, playing bridge. She was a great cook, hosting family lunches for her children until her health no longer allowed it.
She marched to the beat of her own drum. Her honor, candor and insight will be remembered.
Virginia is interred at St. James Episcopal Memory Garden. It was her wish to have no funeral gathering.
