Tigers pick up big Region 1 win at Jubilee Stadium

DAPHNE, Ala. – The Baldwin County High Tigers took a 20-14 win over Daphne at Jubilee Stadium Friday.

Not since 2004 have the Tigers left the field with a varsity victory over the Trojans. BCHS head coach Nathan McDaniel, who coached at DHS before taking over the Tigers’ program, said he knew play on both sides of the ball and the kicking game would determine the outcome.

“Anytime you play Daphne or some of these other teams in our region, it never goes according to plan,” he said. “But I’m just so proud of these guys for their resiliency. A lot of people counted us out, but these guys weren’t having it. They never quit. They found a way and got it done.”

Freshman quarterback Anthony (A.J.) Mix along with kicker Josh Burton helped the Tigers take a 13-7 lead at the half. A second-half touchdown by Josh Crook took it to 20 points and the BCHS defense helped hold Daphne to 14 points on the night.

“Defensively, we played really well,” McDaniel said. “And they have before, but we had not been capitalizing on the turnovers. But, tonight we forced some key turnovers and took advantage of some of them. A.J. Mix is just a remarkable young player for us. Makes good decisions on his feet. He did great in his first start at quarterback, but we’re not surprised at how well he did. And Josh (Burton) did a great job kicking for us all night, too.”

Burton hit field goals from 40 and 45 yards out in the first half as well as the point-after-touchdown kick following a Mix-to-Martavious Crook scoring pass from seven yards out. Daphne scored on Christian Williams’ 90-yard kick return following Burton’s first field goal in the first half and a Gage Bonner-to-Williams-TD pass of 37 yards in the second half.

Region battles continue down the stretch as Baldwin County (3-3, 2-3) will host the Spanish Fort Toros (5-1, 4-0) on Oct. 12 and Daphne (2-4, 1-3) will travel to Robertsdale (2-5, 2-3).
