Council gives OK for liquor license

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — There was no objection at the Robertsdale City Council meeting on Monday, Jan. 7 to grant a restaurant retail liquor license to a restaurant and bar in a local neighborhood.

The Council voted unanimously to approve the request from Billy Jacks Grill & Bar at 22951 Alabama 59 S. in Robertsdale. Ultimately the license will be granted by the State of Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.

In October, a pair of residents spoke out against the proposed business, saying that they did not want a bar in their neighborhood.

“This is a small, quiet neighborhood,” said one resident. “We have families with young children and I don’t think it’s appropriate to have this in our back yard.”

No one spoke for or against the business at the Jan. 7 meeting.

Billy Jacks Grill & Bar opened a Facebook page in September and began posting notices and photos saying that they are striving for, “a great family fun atmosphere with great food and drinks. Games for the family and TVs for the sports fans.”

The establishment opened for business on Monday, Jan. 21.

The Facebook page also says the establishment will have karaoke and it appears that they will have a large courtyard.

Residents also expressed concern that, as adjacent property owners, they have not been informed of whether or not the business has obtained a liquor license, or any other activity.

Mayor Charles Murphy said since there is no change in zoning for the property, it will likely not require a public hearing to open the restaurant.

The city also maintains a noise ordinance prohibiting activity in a residential neighborhood after 11 p.m.

In other business Jan. 7 the council:

•Approved a sponsorship request by the Rosinton Running Club for the 14th Annual Armadillo Dash at a cost of $150. The 5K and 1-mile fun run is set for Saturday, March 16 at Rosinton School on County Road 64.

•Approved a donation request in the amount of $500 from the Robertsdale High School Naval Jr. ROTC to attend a national competition.

•Voted to allow the public works department to purchase three new vehicles.
