On June 14, the Fairhope Police Department posted on its official Facebook page that Sergeant Jean White, Fairhope’s first female police officer, had died at the age of 82.
According to the Fairhope PD:
“White left high school early during a time when it was not uncommon for a young woman to get married at sixteen.
“Eventually, White went back to Fairhope High School after convincing the Board of Education to permit an adult married woman to attend classes. She earned her high school diploma and continued to the University of South Alabama and then Troy University where she earned a master’s degree in criminology. “Persuasion project number two was demonstrating that Baldwin County needed a Juvenile Probation Officer, and that she became. White followed her ambition and was hired as an investigator for the Fairhope Police Department in 1978, where she proudly served until 1996. “With respect for the tremendous commitment to the City of Fairhope, we honor Sergeant Jean White and extend our love and prayers to her family.”
