Baseball player Mike Farnell recently was chosen to participate in the Major League Dreams Showcase. The Spanish Fort High School graduate was among the top 100 prospects from the summer Northwoods League chosen for the showcase by a group of Major League Baseball scouts.
The catcher was among four Bismarck Larks players chosen for the day of workouts before MLB scouts with a double-header afterward.
Farnell was the starter for the North squad in the the Northwoods mid-season All-Star Game, during which he singled in two at-bats. He was among two Larks in the Home Run Derby at the All-Star festivities.
As of Monday, he batted .277 in 55 games for Bismarck. He had six home runs and 30 runs batted in. As a pitcher, he had a 0-0 record and 4.69 earned run average in five games. He also had a key RBI single in the Larks’ first-half playoff (3-1) win over the St. Cloud Rox. The Larks will now get to host their second-half playoff at the end of the season.
Earlier this season, Farnell clubbed 10 home runs for Division I Murray State hitting .319 with 44 RBIs.


More summer baseball
Pitcher Thomas Boothe had a 2-3 record, one save and 3.49 ERA in 15 games for Nevada in the M.I.N.K. summer league. The Bayside Academy product played for East Central Community College in the spring.
Troy University pitcher Will Carnley was 1-0 with a 10.65 ERA in eight games for Winter Garden in the Florida league. He competed for Robertsdale High.
University of West Alabama's Corey Kelley bated .263 in 31 games for the Madisonville Miners of the Ohio Valley league. The Gulf Shores High graduate had two home runs and 17 RBIs.

Football
Samford University senior tight end Kevin Marion has been nominated for the Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team, the top community service honor for college football. Among 169 nominees, the former Toro had 11 receptions for 135 yards in 10 games last year.

Women's outdoor track and field
Previously at Foley High, Eastern Illinois University junior Kaitlyn Ebert finished third in the javelin throw at the Pacesetter Sports Invitational. She also competed in the discus throw. Other 2018 high lights:
INDOOR - Competed in two meets during the indoor season... competed in the shot put with a season best mark of 34'10.50" coming at the EIU Friday Night.
OUTDOOR - Competed in eight meets during the outdoor season... threw the javelin and discus... season best javelin toss was 118'4.75" at the SIU Bill Cornell... season best discus mark was 112'3" at EIU’s Big Blue Meet.
