LOXLEY, Alabama — The Loxley City Council approved an increase of just over $2 per month for the town’s garbage rates, plus additional changes to its town ordinance during its Dec. 10 meeting.

Rates for residential customers went from $18.06 per month for each single-family dwelling unit, $14.88 for households whose head is age 65 or older; and $21.25 for business establishments to $20.08, $16.90 and $23.27 respectively, an increase of $2.02 per month.

In addition, the council voted on the following changes to the town ordinance:

•Went from 50-gallon cans to newly purchased 96-gallon cans.

•The previous ordinance allowed for only one can per household for residential customers. Residential customers can now have one additional can for a $5 per month fee.

•Under the previous ordinance the business rate included two cans with a limit of one additional set can for an additional $12.50 per can. Business establishments can now have two additional cans for a fee of $10 per month for each additional can.

The council took three separate actions on Dec. 10 regarding garbage collection.

First, the council passed Ordinance No. 2018-25, which repealed and replaced Ordinance No. 2002-01 passed Jan. 14, 2002.

Next, the council adopted Resolution No. 2018-26, establishing the new garbage rates along with the additional changes specified above.

Finally, the council adopted Resolution No. 2018-27, ceasing services of the Baldwin County Commission in an area within the municipal limits along U.S. 31, establishing that the town will now provide solid waste collection service in that area.

In other business Dec. 10, the council voted to change fees for the Loxley Civic Center, saying that only residents within the town of Loxley will receive a reduced rate of $300 to rent the Civic Center.

Previously all residents in the Central Baldwin area were able to run the Civic Center at that rate.

Now all residents outside the town limits of Loxley will have to pay $400 to rent the Civic Center.

Also on Dec. 10 the council:

•Postponed a public hearing and tabled action on a rezoning request from Sawgrass Consulting LLC from R-1A to R-1B for property on County Road 55 in Loxley.

•Accepted roads for maintenance in the Stonebridge subdivision for phases 5A, 5B and 5C.

•Approved a parade permit application for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Remembrance march on Monday, Jan. 21. Participants will march along Alabama 59 from the Loxley Church of God to the Loxley Civic Center, where a program to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held.

•Donated $500 to the Central Baldwin Middle School cheerleaders to attend competiton.
