Loxley Library holds open house

LOXLEY, Alabama — The Loxley Public Library recently received a facelift and is ready to serve the community.

“It was basically gutted,” said Mayor Billy Middlton of the historic structure, which served as St. Raphael’s Roman Catholic Church until being consolidated with several other area churches to form St. Patrick’s in Robertsdale in the mid-1970s. “Everything in here was redone except for the ceilings.”

The building was closed from December until June 21 for the renovations. Patty Hudson was hired as library director July 1, assisted by Linda Bankester.

“We are very proud of our beautiful renovated library,” Hudson said in a release issued by the Baldwin County Library Cooperative. “We are grateful to the Town of Loxley, its employees and the volunteers who worked so hard to revitalize the library and its grounds. We hope that everyone will drop by and celebrate the Loxley Public Library.”

The town held an open house for the structure on Saturday, Sept 8. The library is located at the corner of Loxley Avenue and Alabama 59.

“We just want to let people know that the library is open and what we have available here,” Middleton said, adding that he was pleased with Saturday’s turnout. “I think we’re in good shape. Patty is a retired school teacher and has some good ideas of what she wants to do, particularly in expanding the library’s youth programs.”

The library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information call the library at 251-964-5695.
