Master Gardener Spring Plant Sale begins tomorrow

Posted

With these lovely, longer and warmer days of spring officially here now, can the annual Baldwin County Master Gardener Spring Plant Sale be far behind? No, the sale of the season is right around the corner on April 4, 5, and 6, Thursday, Friday and Saturday on Highway 98, west of Fish River Bridge across from the Weeks Bay Reserve.

Happy and information-seeking gardeners (and the occasional celebrity gardener, Felder Rushing) have been anticipating satisfying the primal urge to garden with the finest plants to be found at this premier spring event.

This is the 20th annual Master Gardener plant sale, under the guidance of Master Gardener, Selena Vaughn. Selena has been gardening since she was a child and comes from a long line of Irish farmers. Since first volunteering at this event in 2006, she has been hooked and at the helm of planning since then.

Selena and other capable Master Gardeners not only sell the plants but are involved in seed planting and propagating many of the plants at this sale. Other plants on sale there are from local nurseries-all grown on the coast, for the coast. Buyers are insured of high-quality plants that are known high achievers in our area.

The Master Gardeners like to sell native plants that are known to perform well here. This popular plant sale is a group effort involving both the Master Gardeners and the folks at Weeks Bay Reserve, who graciously donate the use of their lovely grounds.

This plant sale is not an ordinary sale where you search and fend for yourself among rows of plants. You will be welcomed by enthusiastic and knowledgeable master gardeners and volunteers eager to help you find the perfect plants for your sunny garden or that shady backyard nook. You will be assisted in finding just what you want from the wide selection of premium annuals, perennials, fresh herbs, shrubs, trees, hummingbird and butterfly attractors, heirloom and rare plants.

Gardeners will be able to shop from among hundreds of healthy specimens of ferns, trees and shrubs and much more. What a grand opportunity to spend a weekend day in the beautiful springtime with lush plants and like-minded gardeners in a festive atmosphere!

This long-standing event and seasonal tradition offer the opportunity to purchase healthy, unique plants and receive expert advice on plant care and planting instructions. There will even be free gardening seminars on Friday and Saturday at 10am and 11am.

As you celebrate the loveliness of spring, don't fight that urge to dig in the dirt and plant beauty and food into your gardens and containers. Make plants to attend the Baldwin County Master Gardener Spring Plant Sale this early April and load up your car with beautiful plants meant to thrive in coastal Alabama. Indulge in the wonder of plants.
