BAY MINETTE, Alabama — Officials with the City of Bay Minette and Bay Minette Airport Authority broke ground on a project Monday, Dec. 3 that will effectively triple the hangar space at the airport.

Bay Minette Mayor Bob Wills and Airport Authority Chairman Mack Byrd were joined by city officials, Airport Authority Board members, and officials with Volkert Inc., the engineer for the project; and M.W. Rogers Construction, the winning bidder, for Monday’s ceremony.

“We are excited and are expecting great things with this expansion,” Wills said.

The $1.5 million project is being funded by an Alabama Department of Transportation Airport Development Grant, General Obligation Development Warrants, and local financing.

The city currently has 10 T-hangars and this project will triple the hangar space at the airport.

“There is currently a waiting list for those hangars to be filled,” Byrd said, “so I see no problem with utilizing this new space.”

Byrd said the expansion is part of several ongoing projects that the Airport Authority has in the works in the coming months, including the installation of an Automatic Weather Authority (AWA) system for the airport.
