Project Prom makes annual event magical for students in need

On Saturday Sarah Anderson will spend the day fluffing skirts, adjusting jewelry and perfecting prom looks for what she hopes are hundreds of girls around the region.

As chairwoman of the Junior Auxiliary of the Eastern Shore’s Project Prom Committee, Anderson says Saturday’s giveaway of hundreds of dresses is one of the most magical days of the year.

“It is the best feeling, it is amazing,” she said. “They are all so appreciative and the parents are overwhelmed and thank us so much such.

“It really is an expense that can be difficult for families in need,” she said.

Three years ago the Junior Auxiliary and the Future Business Leaders of America at Fairhope High School joined forces to put on the event after the auxiliary received a large donation of dresses, many new with the tags still attached.

This year organizers said they have at least 500 dresses to give away as well as shoes, jewelry and other accessories. Local beauty shops also donate door prizes.

Once girls choose their dress, volunteers steam it and carefully bag it.

The giveaway will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 at Fairhope High School from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and is open to students from across the county.
