Robertsdale Council passes 2018-19 budget

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale City Council passed a nearly $20 million budget for the coming fiscal year at its meeting Monday, Sept. 17.

One of the largest expenditures for the coming year, said Mayor Charles Murphy, will be the sludge removal at the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, which has been budgeted at a cost of $310,000.

At its meeting Sept. 6, the council voted to reject bids for the project after the bids came in at more than double the budgeted amount.

Murphy said the city plans to do some of the work using city employees before re-biding the project later this year.

In all, the 2018-19 fiscal year budget, which begins on Oct. 1, included revenues of $19,792,013, with expenditures of $18,441,190 and total debt expenses of $1,896,543.

That leaves a deficit for the next fiscal year of $545,720, but a surplus of $677,188 in the 2017-18 fiscal year will leave a net surplus for 2019 of $131,468, according to figures presented at Monday’s meeting.

Once again, the largest surplus is in the city’s electrical department with revenues of $9,478,000 and expenses of $5,899,154 for a surplus of $3,578,846, which balances a deficit in the general government fund of $2,301,294 with projected revenues of $6,179,013 and expenses of $8,480,307.

There is also a budget surplus of $246,323 in the city’s water department with revenues of $1,415,000 and expenses of $1,168,677, while deficits are projected for the city’s gas ($33,827), sewer ($14,579) and sanitation ($124,646) departments.

In other business Sept. 17, the council:

•Donated $3,000 to the Robertsdale High School basketball team for the 6th Annual Robertsdale Pre-Thanksgiving Tournament, which will be held Nov. 19-21 at the school.

•Approved the roster for the Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Department.

•Approved an annexation request from Pat Achee for property on County Road 54.

•Approve a rezoning request from Pat Achee from R-1 residential to PUD, Planned Unit Development for property on County Road 54.

•Approved a rezoning request from Terry Bonds from R-2 residential to M-U on Chicago Street.
