SPANISH FORT -- Spanish Fort Mayor Mike McMillan is free on $500 bond after being arrested Thursday on a charge of harassment.

The mayor turned himself in at the Baldwin County Corrections Center after being notified of the misdemeanor charge, according to a statement by the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office.

A woman filed a complaint that she was “slapped in the face” by McMillan around Oct. 1.

The report was forwarded to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division. After an investigation, a warrant was issued to the victim, the statement said.

The victim signed a warrant accusing McMillan of third-degree harassment.

McMillan was booked into the jail at 2:39 p.m. Thursday and released on bond at 3:28 p.m., according to jail records.

On Monday, McMillan issued a statement, but did not take press questions at the Spanish Fort City Council meeting..

"I want to thank everyone for the tremendous outpouring of support I have received since these charges were brought," he said in the statement. "I look forward to having my day in court where all the evidence will come forth, and the truth will be borne out. I am proud to have served the people of this community for 17 years on the Planning Commission, City Council and as mayor. I am satisfied that, after a full and fair hearing, the allegations against me will be disproved, and I will be exonerated.".
