The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s mission is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

Since 2004, the AFSP’s Out of the Darkness Walks have built a movement to raise awareness and funds to fight this leading cause of death. Together, our community sends the message that you are never alone, that healing is possible, and when we connect, we create hope!   Last year, at the 9th annual South Alabama Out of the Darkness Walk at Daphne City Hall, we raised more than $65,000 and had 1,200 registered walkers.

Due to this unprecedented pandemic, we may not be gathering together in person this year, but we can still connect and unite together in our own community through the South Alabama Out of the Darkness Experience on Nov. 8.

We know our work is needed now more than ever. We are all experiencing feelings of uncertainty and instability due to the unknown, and this can take a huge toll on ourselves and everyone around us.  The South Alabama Out of the Darkness Experience is so much more than just a fundraising event. It’s a brave space – encouraging dialogue and sharing of experiences, and it’s a place that offers hope and healing.

There will be a virtual statewide Kickoff event for the Alabama Out of the Darkness Experience on Saturday, Sept. 12th from 9 to 10 a.m.  Additionally, there will be wellness challenges and activities leading up to the virtual program on Sunday, Nov. 8th.  Our goal is to have activities that encourage connection and healing. Participants will register for the Experience in their own area; however, the virtual program will be held statewide and will begin at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8th.

While the Experience is not completely finalized, plans include an opening ceremony, speakers, a bead ceremony, and a wellness message.  Additionally, participants will be encouraged to conclude their day with some type of wellness activity such as walking, biking, cooking a family dinner, meditating, etc.  A list of suggested activities will be communicated with participants prior to the day of the Experience.

So, please go to AFSP.org/Daphne to learn more, to register for and to support the South Alabama Out of the Darkness Experience.

When you register, you will receive emails keeping you informed of everything that is going on with the event.  Also, you can form a team in honor of your lost loved one; your church, civic group, school or business can also form a team, you can join a team, or register on your own and help raise funds that are needed now more than ever!!

Mental health and preventing suicide must continue to be a top priority, and we cannot continue our work without you. Remember, together we can stop suicide!
