Baldwin County High Hall of Fame inducts class of 2019

BAY MINETTE - The Baldwin County High School Athletic Hall of Fame committee has inducted its Class of 2019. The following have been selected: Telfair (Ted) James Mashburn (1967); John William Perrett Jr. (1979); Eartha M. White (1999); Anthony Mix (2001); Lee Huggins (2004); and Whitney Hadley Thompson (2006). Associate members are Chad Harrelson and Rowe Watson. The BCHS Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame held a reception Aug. 30 and also honored the new inductees in pre-game ceremonies later that evening.
Their Hall of Fame plaques will now be added to the wall of honor along the corridors of Baldwin County High School.

- Ted Mashburn graduated in 1967, and was a three-sport letterman, lettering in football, basketball, and track. He played on Lyle Underwood’s first team at B.C.H.S. and was a Player of the Week and All-County selection in football. After high school, he received a football scholarship to Livingston University where he was a four-year letterman. He earned two letters as a basketball player at the University of Edinburgh in 1978-80. He earned four letters from Oxford University in England for basketball. In 1985, he earned his PH.D. from Oxford University. He is professor of Philosophy and acting dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Mobile. At the University of Mobile, he received the Megginson Teaching Award and Megginson Research Award. He has been a Baptist minister since 1987. Ted and his wife, Rene’ reside in Fairhope. They have two children and three grandchildren.

- John William Perrett Jr. graduated in 1979, lettering in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was named to the 1978 Football All-County and All-Regions teams as a linebacker and punter. He was named as the WWSM Radio Defensive Football Player of the Year. He was selected for the 1979 Baseball All-County, All-Region, and All-State teams. In 1978 and 1979, he was named to the All County Advanced Babe Ruth All-Star baseball team. After high school, he was offered a full grant-in-aid scholarship to Livingston University, but decided to accept a baseball scholarship to play baseball at Faulkner State Community College. At Faulkner State, he was selected to the All-A.J.C.AA Southwest Conference team for two years. In 1983, he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama and graduated cum laude. He served in the United States Navy, graduating from the Navy War College, College of Command and Staff, and awarded a Master’s of Strategies Studies degree from the Air Force Air University. During his service, he was commanding officer of Navy Cargo handling Battalion TWELVE, leading a group of over 200 soldiers deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During his time of serving in the United States Navy, he received numerous military awards. He served as the United States Navy Emergency Preparedness Liaison officer for the State of Tennessee, and as the Director of Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency. In 2013, he retired with the rank of Captain from the United States Navy, after 30 years of service, including mobilization in the Middle East and Afghanistan, and service in the Far East and Europe. John and his wife, Lee reside in Franklin, Tennessee. They have two children.


- Eartha M. White graduated in 1999, receiving four letters in basketball. She was a member of the B.C.H.S. State Final Four basketball team. During her basketball career, she received several All-Tournament and All-County honors. She was named to the All-State team, and was the first female athlete from B.C.H.S. to play in the Alabama/Mississippi All-Star game, and to sign a scholarship to a Division I College. After high school, she was selected as a Junior College All-American. After Junior College, she signed to play basketball at the University of West Virginia. In her junior year, she was fifth in rebounding in the Big East Conference and led her team in rebounding. She led the West Virginia team, with an average of seven rebounds per game. Her best game of the season was against Georgetown University, when she scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds in a key, 71-70 overtime win over the Hoyas. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Currently, she is working at the Escambia Detention Center in Pensacola, Florida. She resides in Bay Minette.

- Anthony Mix graduated in 2001, and was a three-sport letterman at B.C.H.S. in football, basketball, and track. In football, he was named to the All-County team for three years, the All-Region team, and the All-State team. He was named to the Basketball All-County team for two years and the Track All-County team for three years. Anthony received national recruiting attention after compiling a high school career that saw him excel at wide receiver, quarterback, and defensive end. An all-around athlete, he was a gifted basketball and track star before deciding to sign with Auburn to play football in 2001. At Auburn in 2002, he had a career long 46-yard reception in the 17-7 upset victory over Alabama. He played on the undefeated SEC Champion team in 2004. He had a career best two-touchdown performance in the Mississippi State game, scoring from 5 and 58 yards. Against Georgia, he caught a 29 yard pass in a big victory and he had a huge 53 yard gain in the Sugar Bowl versus Virginia Tech. After college, he played in the National Football League with the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins. He resides in Bay Minette.

- Lee Huggins graduated in 2004, and was a two-sport letterman, lettering in baseball and football. In baseball, he was a four-year letterman, was named to the All-County and All-Region teams for three years, and the All-State team. He played in the baseball North/South All-Star game and the East/West All-Star game. After high school, he played baseball at Faulkner State Community College, where he received All-State honors. After leaving Faulkner State, he played baseball at the University of West Florida, where he maintained a .300 batting average. In 2009, he played with the South Louisana Pipeliners, Pensacola Pelicans, and the Lake City Blackbears. With the 2009 Lake County Blackbears, he played in 50 games with a batting average of .330, eight homeruns, and 38 runs batted in. In 2010, he played with the Lake Erie Crushers. In 66 games with the Crushers, he was a consistent hitter and had 7 homeruns. Lee and his wife, Ryleigh reside in Bay Minette. They have two children.

- Whitney Hadley Thompson graduated in 2006, lettering five years in softball and two years in volleyball. In softball, she was member of the 2005 North/South All-Star team, a four-year All-County selection, a 2005 Mobile Register Super 12 player, and participated in the 2002 Elite Eight softball tournament. In 2002, she was the Most Valuable Player of the Section tournament and the 2003 team Most Valuable Player. She was the B.C.H.S. Pitcher of the Year in 2003, 2004, and 2005. She was selected as a member of the All-Area team for three years. Other honors included: Honorable Mention for the Birmingham News All-State in 2004; Gatorade Will to Win High School Athlete; Mobile Register Player of the Week; and Kiwanis Player of the Week multiple times. She joined the B.C.H.S. softball team as a seventh grader and had a no-hitter in her first varsity action. She won more than 100 games during her career, and averaged 20 wins a season with 15 no-hitters. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Who’s Who Among High School Students, the Student Council, the French and Spanish Clubs, and the yearbook staff, and graduated with a 3.75 G.P.A. After high school, she signed with Faulkner State Community College. She graduated from Remington College for Medical Assisting with X-ray/EKG, with a 4.0 G.P.A. Whitney and her husband, Aaron reside in Bay Minette. They have two children.



- Chad Harrelson graduated in 1989, and was a three-sport letterman, lettering in football, baseball, and soccer. He was a member of the first varsity soccer team at B.C.H.S. and scored the first goal for a B.C.H.S. varsity boys’ soccer team. He has been the varsity boys’ soccer coach at St. Paul’s Episcopal School for 15 years His overall record is 364 wins, 177 losses, and 58 ties. At St. Paul’s, his soccer teams have been outstanding; his team was State Champions in 2019 and played in the 5A finals four times. His teams have played in the Final Four eight times. He was named the 2019 N.S.C.A.A. All-State Coach of the Year in private schools, 2012 and 2013 The Press Register Mobile Metro Coach of the Year, 2011 Birmingham News Coach of the Year, and has been selected three times to coach the A.H.S.A.A. South All-Star team. . From 1998 – 2004, he was the varsity boys soccer coach at B.C.H.S. In 2001, his team won the first soccer region championship in the school’s history. At B.C.H.S., He had the first two playoff appearances in school history, led fundraising and construction efforts for the soccer complex, established and directed the Southern Shootout High School Soccer tournament, and established and directed the Bay Minette Soccer Club. Presently, he is a teacher and coach at St. Paul’s Episcopal School. He has three children, Joshua, Noah, and Emma.


- Rowe Watson was native of Enterprise, Alabama. He was born in 1894 and died in August 1935. He died in Enterprise Hospital after contracting Malaria. He was a 1915 graduate of the University of Alabama and acquired the title of Professor Rowe Watson after beginning his teaching career at the University. He taught school at Abbeville, Gordo, Reform, and then he and his wife Laura Walker Watson came to Bay Minette in 1919. Professor was hired as principal for the Bay Minette schools and his wife was a seventh-grade teacher in the Bay Minette schools. They lived at the Presbyterian manse in Bay Minette with school superintendent S.M. Tharp.
Watson was heavily involved in city and education. He served as Boy Scout scoutmaster and helped bring football and basketball to Bay Minette along with volunteers Harry West and Ort Ertzinger. Watson served as head football coach in early 1920s and also was influential in the both the men's and women’s basketball program. That program won Baldwin County High's only state championship when they captured the girl’s title over Prattville in 1921 . The 1921 men's team was champion of all South Alabama and went undefeated. The women's team was coached by Annie Lee Robertson and Watson. Professor Rowe Watson spent seven years at BCHS before returning to his Southeast Alabama home area where he entered business with his brother. He was then elected superintendent of the Coffee County Schools in 1928. He was serving his second term when his illness struck him. It was thought he contracted the Malaria on a trip through the bayou of Louisiana. His wife Laura ran an orphanage for many years before returning to live in Bay Minette area until her death here in 1982.
