BCSO investigating dog dragged behind truck

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after video surfaced on social media last week of a dog being dragged behind a truck on County Road 95 just north of Elberta.

“I can tell you that we have identified and spoken with the dog’s owner and are currently investigating this case,” said Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack during a press conference held Monday at BCSO Central Investigations Command in Robertsdale.

The dog, a 2-year-old Pointer named Charlie, was taken to a veterinarian where he was euthanized, Mack said. There were other dogs riding in the back of the pickup truck who were unharmed in the incident. No charges have been filed in the case.

“In the state of Alabama, it is not illegal for dogs to ride in the back of a pickup truck,” Mack said. “In order to charge the owner with animal cruelty, we are going to have to prove that he intended to harm the dog. In the coming days we will review all the evidence, including the Facebook video, to make that determination.”
