Driver license office Saturday opening set to begin this week

FOLEY, Alabama — Extension of State Driver License Offices, postponed because of last Saturday’s impending inclement weather, is slated to begin this Saturday at the Fairhope and Foley Satellite courthouses.

Saturday hours for State Driver License Offices at the Fairhope and Foley Satellite Courthouses, set for 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., will now begin on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Capt. Jonathan Archer with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the extended hours are primarily because of an overload of licenses being issued for ALEA’s STAR ID program.

Effective Oct. 1, 2020, every air traveler will need a REAL ID compliant license/ID (STAR ID) or another form of identification for domestic air travel.

STAR ID is also required for access to military bases and federal offices, Archer said. STAR ID is not required to vote.

“We’ve gotten that question at several different locations we’ve been to,” he said. “Those are the only three instances where a STAR ID is required.”

The extended hours apply only to the issuance of new driver licenses and renewals. If you have to reinstate your driver license for any reason, those offices will not be open on Saturdays, Archer said.

Extended hours apply only to the Foley and Fairhope Satellite offices, Archer said. The Driver License offices at the main courthouse in Bay Minette and Central Annex in Robertsdale will not be open on Saturday. ALEA also maintains an office on D’Olive Street in Bay Minette, but that office is only open one day a week and will not open for extended hours, Archer said.
