FAIRHOPE 38, MURPHY 6

MOBILE, Ala. – Fairhope stormed into a rainy Ladd-Peebles Stadium and left with a 38-6 win over Class 7A, Region 1 rival Murphy Thursday night. The Pirates pounded out a 31-6 lead by halftime, then kept the Panthers scoreless while adding a fourth-quarter score down the stretch.

Fairhope quarterback Devin Mitchell threw touchdown passes to Damell Bell, Riley Leonard and one to Ramone Bradley in the second quarter. Big catches by Jackson Turner helped set up two of the scores. Samuel Rayborn also added a 39-yard field goal before the half, was 5-for-5 on extra points and kept the Panthers backed up with effective punts.

The Pirates defense put up the first Fairhope score when linebacker Emmanuel (EJ) Burrell scooped up a loose ball at the Panther 16-yard line and ran it in.

In the fourth quarter Braxton Jordan capped a long Pirate drive with a run up the middle from the Panther 10-yard line.

lead Fairhope to a 38-6 victory over Murphy in a Class 7A, Region 1 game Thursday night at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

“It’s always good to build on a lead and the earlier the better. I’m really proud of how the guys handled the (weather-shortened preparations) this week and came out and excuted. Devin has such a great touch on the ball. It makes it easy for receivers to make plays downfield,” Fairhope coach Tim Carter said adding that his defense is helping. “Our defense has improved each week. Our schedule doesn’t let up though, so I’m excited for what they bring every game.”

Mitchell said he and his receiver corps were clicking in the passing game.

“Our game plan was to run two or three times, then start to feel them out. I had good communication and chemistry with my receivers. We started picking and popping and that led to some big plays downfield for us. And our defense played great, too."

Turner said he and his teammates have great confidence in their quarterback.

“Devin is accurate, likes to scramble and is always composed. Our offensive coordinators came up with a great game plan for us and we just executed it.”

Murphy scored in the first half when quarterback Chris Moffett found D’Andre Bailey for a 23-yard touchdown.

Next week: Fairhope (2-1, 2-0) hosts Theodore (1-1, 1-0) next Friday night in another key 7A region 1 battle. Murphy (0-3,0-2) will host Mary G. Montgomery (1-1, 0-1).
