Pirates pound Warriors to improve to 3-1 in 7A Region 1 league play

MOBILE, Ala. – Fairhope quarterback Devin Mitchell tossed to Jackson Turner for a 46-yard touchdown pass, to Ramone Bradley for a 55-yard airborne score and ran in a 41-yard keeper at Ladd-Peebles Stadium Friday night.

The Pirates’ kicker Sam Rayborn also added 30-yard field goal in the second quarter and went 6-for-6 on extra points. He also denied the Warriors a kickoff runback with seven touchbacks. By halftime, Fairhope pulled away for a 31-10 lead on a touchdown pass from Riley Leonard to Bradley.

In the second half, Leonard and Bradley connected again to set up a first-and-goal at the Davidson seven. From there, the Pirate’s front opened a gap for running back Damell Bell and a (seven-yard) rushing touchdown and a 38-10 lead. Bell later capped another scoring drive in the fourth quarter with a 2-yard run after a swing pass from Leonard to Michael Colclasure who took the Pirates from midfield to the Warriors’ doorstep.

The Warriors’ were led by Johnathan Whitfield with a 30-yard TD run in the third quarter, a 65-yard run by Kolby Blunt and a 41-yard field goal by Joe Montano in the first half.

“I thought the key was our offense, we just had a lot of big plays,” said Pirates coach Tim Carter. “Davidson is really strong at key places like running back and defensively they definitely presented some challenges for us.”

Mitchell sat out the second half with a sore hamstring, but was not injured, Carter said. He added that Leonard is up to stepping in anytime.

“Devin will be OK, but Riley is an outstanding backup. He’s waiting his turn. Nothing changes for us when he comes in. He’s going to be a name to look for the next three years.”

Fairhope improved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in 7A Region 1. Last year, the Pirates defeated Davidson 31-17 at W.C. Majors Field in Fairhope. Next week (Sept. 28): Fairhope will host neighboring Jubilee Cup rival Daphne in a non-region game.
