SILVERHILL, Alabama — A Fairhope man is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase which began when he allegedly struck a police officer with his vehicle at a safety checkpoint Friday night in Silverhill.

Jamie E. Middleton Jr., 21, of Fairhope is in jail without bond, charged with two counts of attempted murder and second-degree assault.

According to a press release issued Saturday by the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit, the Silverhill Police Department was conducting a safety checkpoint on Alabama 104 in Silverhill in the overnight hours Friday night/Saturday morning.

During the operation a Toyota sedan, allegedly driven by Middleton, approached officers who were conducting the checkpoint. As a Silverhill Police Officer walked toward the vehicle the passenger in the vehicle, identified as Shamone Morris, began leaning over into the driver’s seat area.

As the officer got closer the car’s engine began to race before the Toyota accelerated toward the officer. The officer was struck and received injuries before the suspect sped towards a second Silverhill police officer, and an ALEA Trooper who was assisting. During the incident officers fired their weapons at the suspects as the officers jumped out of the way of the vehicle speeding toward them.

The suspects fled the scene and led law enforcement officers from multiple agencies on a pursuit through Baldwin County. The vehicle pursuit ended when the suspects crashed into a utility pole in the Barnwell Community.

Morris fled from the vehicle after the crash. He was taken into custody a short time later. It was at this time that law enforcement learned that Morris received injuries during the incident. He was transported to a local hospital and is currently being treated for his injuries. He is not being charged in the incident and is expected to recover.

The Silverhill Police Officer that was injured during this event was transported to a local hospital. He was treated and released.

The Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit is conducting the investigation relating to this incident. This investigation is in the preliminary stages and it is ongoing. Other details will not be immediately available.
