ELBERTA, Ala. — Not every team in the state of Alabama is having a difficult start to high school football. The Robertsdale Golden Bears are riding high after they accounted for their second win of the season with a dominating 33-7 win over the Elberta Warriors. This is the first time since the 2000 season where the Golden Bears have started the season with a 2-0 record. In the first week of the season, the Golden Bears shocked the Foley Lions 38-23 at home.

After stopping the Warriors drive to midfield, the Golden Bears scored from their first play from scrimmage with a 90-yard jet sweep run from wide receiver Glen Williams. The Warriors found it difficult to stop the Golden Bears’ Wing-T offense without the forcing of turnovers.

Near the end of the first quarter, the Bears scored again on a 55-yard touchdown run by senior running back Logan Wilson. Two drives later for Robertsdale, the Golden Bears were able to convert a long-drive into a four-yard touchdown run from junior running back Taven Curry. The Bears went into halftime with a 21-0 lead over Elberta.

The Warriors were able to get on the scoreboard with half of the third quarter gone thanks to a 48-yard touchdown pass from Warriors quarterback Brady Krueger to wide receiver Travis Smyth. The Bears were able to answer back one play later with a 70-yard touchdown pass from Grant Driver to wide receiver Seth Allen. After the play, Allen said that the play-action caused the Warriors’ man coverage cornerback and the one-high safety to crash in enough for a quick busted coverage pass to the outside.

This was the one pass completion for Driver throughout the game as the Bears were running the ball highly efficiently. On their next possession in the fourth quarter, Wilson scored the last touchdown for Robertsdale with a 69-yard run.

The Golden Bears accounted for 474 total yards on offense with 404 of them coming from the run game. The Bears averaged 10.6 yards per rush in the game. Wilson rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries for an average of 13.1 yards per rush. Curry rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Finally, Williams rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown on seven carries as a jet sweep receiver.

The Golden Bears defense was stout as they held the Warriors’ offense to 241 total yards. Junior middle linebacker Sage Givens accounted for six and a half total tackles, three sacks, a tackle for loss, a quarterback hits, and a pass breakup. Sophomore defensive end/tackle Whit Whitaker accounted for two and a half tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss, one pressure, and a pass breakup.

Both Robertsdale and Elberta will start divisional play this week. The Golden Bears (2-0) will travel for a second week in a row to take on the Citronelle Wildcats (1-0). The Warriors (1-1) will travel to face the Faith Academy Rams (2-0).
