LAS VEGAS — Robertsdale native Kyle Irwin competed in his fifth National Finals Rodeo held Dec. 5-14 in Las Vegas, pocketing $50,000 and a fifth-round victory.
“Oh, it’s a huge relief,” Irwin said about the Monday, Dec. 9 victory in an article for prorodeo.com. “We do this to win gold buckles and averages, but I came here to win as much money as I could because that’s how I make a living for my family. So, $26,000 and change is great, and I just hope to build off this momentum. It’s a wonderful group of guys you’re going up against who are so talented, so you’ve got to max it out every night.”
Irwin pocketed $26,231 to be exact for the 3.7-second go in round five of the NFR finals, finishing 14th in the 2019 PRCA Ram World Standings in steer wrestling with a total of $134,933.51 for the year.
The 2008 graduate of Robertsdale High School, who is also a relative of Professional Cowboy Association Founder/Director Bo Campbell, the son of Robertsdale Council member Ruthie Campbell and Ken Irwin, The 29-year-old, who now lives in Florida with his wife Randa and son, claimed the top prize in steer wrestling competition at the famed Calgary Stampede held in July of this year in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and top honors at the Lawton Rangers Rodeo Aug. 7-10 in Lawton, Oklahoma.
After winning the Alabama state high school championship twice and finishing once as reserve champion, Kyle joined the National Finals Rodeo circuit in 2011 after winning the NIRA Central Plains Region titles in 2010 and 2012 as an amateur and qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo four times.
He has qualified for the Vegas finals five of the last six years, finishing second in the world standings in 2014, 13th in 2015, fifth in 2017 and 12th last year.
