Silverhill expands high-speed internet service again

SILVERHILL, Alabama — The town of Silverhill continues to expand the choices when it comes to high-speed internet service.

At its meeting Nov. 6, the Silverhill Town Council voted to approve an agreement with Wysper Technologies.

Wysper Technologies owner Hayden Giddings met with council members in September with a proposal to expand high-speed internet service to Silverhill.

After successfully launching service to Robertsdale and Foley, Giddings said, the company is looking to expand its “line-of-sight” internet services into other communities, such as Silverhill.

The equipment would be placed on the water tower at the ball park and would not interfere with existing cellular equipment and plans to place other internet-based equipment there, Giddings said.

In July, the council voted to approve a contract with Point Broadband to use the town’s water tower to install equipment for internet services.

In April, officials with Point Broadband and ITC Holdings told Gulf Coast Media that the company is expecting to access about 25 towers in Baldwin County over the next four weeks.

Contracts have already been signed with other municipalities, as well as the Baldwin County Commission, North Baldwin Utilities and Belforest. Both Loxley and Summerdale approved 10-year contracts with the company in May.

“There have been some delays, but we are working to get everything up and running as soon as possible,” Point Broadband representative Sherry Sullivan told council members at the July 17 meeting.

In other business Nov. 6, the council:

•Approved an ordinance amending the town’s wrecker rotation.

•Discussed changes to the town ordinance pertaining to the Silverhill Volunteer Fire Department. Action was tabled on the measure pending a review by fire department officials.

•Approved changes to the resolution regarding longevity pay for town employees.

•Approved a resolution to pre-apply for an ADEM grant for water system improvements.

•Approved an amendment to the town’s zoning ordinance.

•Approved the purchase of one new vehicle and the future purchase of a second new vehicle for the town’s police department.
