ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Six teams from Baldwin County qualified for Alabama’s National Archery in the Schools Program Alabama State Championship to be held April 7 in Montgomery.

Five teams from Baldwin County qualified during one of nine region archery competitions for Alabama's National Archery in the School's Program held March 15 and 16 at Robertsdale Elementary School. Nearly 500 competitors representing 22 teams from Baldwin and Mobile counties competed in the two-day tournament.

A team from Fairhope High also qualified for the state meet.

Robertsdale topped the middle school division at the two-day tournament, qualifying for the state meet with a score of 3,135, nearly 100 points ahead of the second place team, Fairhope Middle School with a score of 3,051. Foley Middle School also qualified in the middle school division with a score of 2,797 behind St. Luke’s Episcopal, which finished with a score of 2,991.

Foley High finished as the top-ranked high school team, qualifying for state with a score of 3,254. St. Luke’s finished second in the high school division with a score of 3,185. Gulf Coast Archery of Foley also qualified for state with a score of 3,078, behind St. Paul’s Episcopal of Mobile with 3,138.

In the elementary division, Gilliard Elementary of Mobile qualified with the high score from the regional of 2,773 with St. Luke’s also qualifying with a score of 2,742. Robertsdale finished third in the elementary division, edging out Loxley Elementary, 2,422 to 2,377, but did not qualify.

NASP is the most successful school archery program and has taught archery to thousands of students in many states. The program provides a physical education curriculum designed to teach International-style archery to students in grades fourth through 12th.

In Alabama, the NASP is a joint venture between the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division and the Alabama Department of Education.

Earlier this year regionals were held in Mobile, Troy, New Market, Northport and Pell City. Cullman and Prattville regionals were held March 17 and 18.

Additional schools from Mobile County qualifying for the state meet are Clark-Shaw Magnet School, Causey Middle, Elsie Collier Elementary, Grand Bay, North Mobile Christian, Old Shell Road School of Creative and Professional Arts, Phillips Preperatory and Saraland High.
