Snook to host first Homecoming Friday in Spanish Fort

Posted

FOLEY, Alabama — For many, the experience of a high school homecoming football game is one of the most vivid memories of childhood.
Students at Snook Christian Academy will have that experience for the first time on Friday, Sept. 22 when they take on South Walton on The Hill in Spanish Fort.
“The support from the community has been tremendous,” said Snook Christian Head of School Thad Butts. “We keep having to re-order football T-shirts. They are selling out as fast as we can get them in. Starting a football program is a lot of work, but we have a great coach in Keith Smith and we’ve had such an overwhelming response from our faculty, staff and parents.”
Homecoming festivities include a week-long list of activities, including different dress-up days every day, beginning with America Monday, in which students were encouraged to dress in all red, white and blue, followed by Camo Day on Tuesday.
Wacky Tacky Day will be featured on Wednesday, along with Wacky Tourist Day on Thursday and School Spirit Day on Friday, where students are encouraged to dress in school colors.

There will also be a mini-Homecoming Parade beginning at 2:15 p.m. on Friday in the school parking lot.
“It will be mostly for the younger students,” Butts said. “It’s a way to get them involved in the festivities.”
The parade will be followed by a pep rally on Friday, culminating in the crowing of the queen and her court during halftime festivities of Friday’s contest.
Students representing each class were voted on by their classmates to represent Snook Christian Academy’s first Homecoming Court with two seniors Callie Coxwell and Lexi Lopez, vying for the title. Additional representatives include: Emma Ross, junior class; Katherine Koniar, sophomore; Malea Blackwell, freshmen; Nola Chambers, eighth grade; and Ally Anderson, seventh grade.

Eagles soaring
After hosting their first-ever home game, a 22-14 victory over St. Patrick Catholic High of Biloxi, Mississippi, Aug. 18 at J.D. Sellars Stadium in Robertsdale, the Eagles continue to soar scoring a combined 108 points in two victories over opponents in Florida.
“We’ve had some injuries and sometimes I feel like we’re holding the team together with baling wire,” Smith said, “but we’ve had some seventh and eighth graders step up and I’m really proud of the way our kids have played so far.”
Snook garnered a 52-12 victory over Robert F. Munroe in Quincey, Florida, on Aug. 25 before recording a 54-32 victory at Rocky Bayou Christian in Niceville Sept. 1 with senior running back Trell Prim scoring five touchdowns in the first half, including 218 yards rushing on eight carries and returning a kickoff 90 yards and a fumble recovery 70 yards for scores, Smith said.
Because of the threat of Hurricane Irma, the Eagles game against Baker, Florida, scheduled for Sept. 8 was cancelled, Smith said.
“They are the defending 1A state champions in Florida, so we were really disappointed that we didn’t get a chance to prove ourselves against a quality team,” Smith said, “but we had a couple of key players that would not have been able to play, so I guess it’s good that we had a week off.”
The Eagles suffered their first loss of the season Friday, Sept. 15 at the hands of North Florida Christian Academy in Tallahassee, the No. 2 ranked team in 2A, whose quarterback, Trey Fisher, is the son of FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher.
“From what I’ve seen, he is a really good passer,” Smith said in an interview before the game, “and they like to throw the ball around a lot, so it will be a real challenge for us.”
The South Walton High Seahawks of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, will be another challenge for the Eagles, coming off a good season, with one of their few losses eventual 1A champion Baker, Smith said, and were 2-1 heading into their Sept. 15 contest.
“It’s going to be exciting,” Smith said. “Our fans did a great job filling the stands in our first game and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play in a great venue like Spanish Fort. I want to invite everyone to come out and support Eagle football.”
