Toros score another ticket to second round with shutout

SPANISH FORT, Ala. -- The Toros took a 31-0 lead into halftime with four touchdowns and a field goal as the Wildcats failed to gain much traction on either side of the ball. Three early scores were off Benjamin Russell turnovers including a 51-yard interception return by Ryan Duff, a blocked punt and a fumbled punt reception recovered by Brady Wiggins at the BRHS 23-yard line.
SFHS quarterback Nick Passarelli tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass to LSU commitment Kris Abrams-Draine, Mike Franklin finished a drive with a touchdown run of 14 yards, Brazil Patrick rushed in from five yards out to cap another while Matthew Quinn added a 30-yard field goal.
The final points of the game were Conner Hegan’s 12-yard touchdown run and Quinn’s fifth of five extra point tries in the third quarter.
Any thoughts of a letdown following last week’s 28-16 win over No. 3 Saraland for the Region 1 championship were dispelled when Spanish Fort opened a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.
“We were coming off a very emotional win last week,” said Spanish Fort head coach Ben Blackmon about the win at Saraland to earn the Class 6A Region 1 Championship. “I’m just so proud of how we played tonight. We talked about coming out early with intensity, compete with energy and never taking any team for granted. And I think we accomplished that and very proud of how they handled that emotional win, then the refocusing on the next goal tonight. Now, we have to get our mind set again, because everything you worked for can go away in just a week.”

The Toros (10-1) will host McAdory (10-1) in the second round on Nov. 16 as Spanish Fort seeks to add to their four state-title trophies.
