LOXLEY, Alabama — The town of Loxley voted at its meeting Monday, Jan. 14 to grant tax incentives for the Buc-ee’s Travel Center, located off County Road 68 and the Baldwin Beach Express.

“This is a standard tax incentive agreement that we have done in the past,” said Shawn Alves, attorney with Stone, Grenade and Crosby, that represents the town in legal matters.

The resolution, passed unanimously at the Jan. 14 meeting, is contingent upon the town annexing the property into its corporate limits. Alves asked the council to call a special meeting during its work session on Monday, Jan. 28, to vote on the annexation.

Construction for more than 50,000-square-foot facility, which also includes 120 fueling stations, began in January 2018. Hundreds flocked to the store’s opening on Jan. 21.

The Baldwin location is the first to be built outside the state of Texas. Three other stores, located in Florida, are also planned for 2019.

Following its first store opening in 1982 in Lake Jackson, Buc-ee’s has steadily gained a loyal customer following and become widely known for:

· A multitude of gas pumps and award-winning, clean restrooms.

· Buc-ee's Beaver Nuggets, which are a decadent caramel coated snack.

· Freshly made barbecue, delicious sandwiches, and pastries.

· A wide assortment of Buc-ee's famous jerky, fresh fudge and other homemade staples.

· Unique apparel, gifts, and handmade craft items, including products featuring the chain's popular buck-toothed “Beaver” mascot.

· Gear for enjoying the outdoors.

Founded in 1982, Buc-ee’s has approximately 40 locations, all of which until now are located in Texas.

The company also operates the largest convenience store in the world, located in New Braunfels, Texas. The New Braunfels Travel Center covers 68,000 square feet and features 120 fueling positions, 83 toilets, 31 cash registers four Icee machines, and 80 fountain dispensers.

Buc-ee’s is based in Lake Jackson, also home to the company’s first convenience store, which is still in operation. For more information, visit buc-ees.com.

The Baldwin County Highway Department announced Wednesday, Jan. 16, that two traffic lights, one at the intersection of Interstate 10 and the Beach Express, and one at the intersection of the Beach Express at County Road 68, were scheduled to become active on Thursday, Jan. 17.

In other business Jan. 14, the council:

•Approved an application for an off-premise beer and wine license for Speedway, located at 29636 Alabama 59. The license will ultimately be granted by the state Alcohol Beverage Control Board.

• Accepted roads for maintenance in Stonebridge subdivision Phase 1A.

• Voted to sponsor the Robertsdale High School wrestling team.

• Presented a proclamation proclaiming Feb. 15 as Arbor Day in the town with a tree giveaway planned for that day at the Loxley Civic Center.

• Approved the estimated contribution billing for Municipal Workers Compensation Fund Inc.

• Approved a bid of $2,795.47 from MobileFixture to replace an ice maker at the Civic Center.

• Voted to replace five vehicles in the town’s Public Works Department at a total cost of $125,207.50. Moving forward, a plan will be implemented to replace utility vehicles on a 10-year basis or mileage of 150,000.
