BAY MINETTE, Alabama — Members of the Baldwin County Farmers Federation Women’s Committee and the Baldwin County Armed Forces Honor Guard paid a visit to residents at the William F. Green Veterans Home recently bringing gifts and spending time speaking with the veterans.

Sandra Waters and her mother-in-law Norma Waters delivered the gifts to veterans on Dec. 11 on behalf of the Women’s Committee.

“We adopted this as our Christmas project this year,” Sandra Waters said. “We wanted to gather together some things that we thought they would enjoy and things they would need in order to ensure these veterans have a Merry Christmas.”

Items collected included clothing, games and puzzles, snacks, and other gifts for the veterans to enjoy.

Barbara Lawson, a member of the Women’s Committee, solicited the help of the Honor Guard to deliver the gifts. Lawson’s husband, Warner C. Lawson, was a veteran and, with the help of the Honor Guard, was the first to receive Military Honors at the Alabama State Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort.

“We have veterans here from across Baldwin County, many of whom don’t have family to visit them, which can be particularly hard at this time of year,” said Bob Tarr with the Honor Guard, whose members are comprised entirely of retired military veterans. “As fellow veterans, this is a perfect opportunity for us to come and show our support for these men and women who fought for our country.”

The William F. Green Veterans Home is a state-run agency that provides care for veterans throughout the area. The home has a maximum capacity of 150 men and women.
