34 Baldwin County students will get the opportunity to attend Space Camp this year, as the Baldwin County Legislative Delegation recently announced the scholarships given to these students through the Space Academy for Leading Students in Alabama (SALSA) program.

Baldwin County Legislative Delegation Chair Steve McMillan (R-Foley) said the delegation was pleased to be able to send more students than usual to the camp.

“Baldwin County had the most number of students apply for scholarships, and we were granted the ability to give out more scholarships to help make sure more of our students get the opportunity to attend the camp,” McMillan said. “Of course, we’re proud to see so many young people want to take the opportunity to learn more about space and science and our delegation is delighted to be able to give these young people an opportunity to further their learning and discovery.”

Reps. McMillan, Alan Baker, Matt Simpson, Joe Faust and Harry Shiver and Sens. Chris Elliott and Greg Albritton were initially allowed to award two scholarships per district. This year, Baldwin County was allotted an additional 20 scholarships for local students to attend the camp.

During their weeklong experience at Space Academy, students will work together as a team to solve complex problems using Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts and 21st century learning skills, learn to train like an astronaut using authentic simulators and embark on their own simulated space mission to the International Space Station, the moon and Mars.

The program has an excellent track record with furthering students’ STEM interests, as studies show 64 percent of Space Camp alumni take additional STEM courses after attending and 61 percent report entering a STEM field of study or career.

The program takes place May 26 through 31.
