GULF SHORES, Alabama — Officials are looking to identify the body of a man found floating in Lake Shelby Friday morning.

According to a post from the Gulf Shores Police Department, the body of what appears to be a middle-aged man was discovered by a fisherman around 9:30 a.m.

Gulf Shores PD, along with Gulf Shores Fire Rescue responded. GSPD detectives were notified were on the scene within minutes to conduct a death investigation.

The man has yet to be identified.

According to published reports, an alligator was discovered near the body, but there is no reason to believe this was an alligator attack.

Lake Shelby is a 750-acre freshwater lake located within Gulf State Park. Park officials said the body was found in the northwest corner of the lake.

Officials are uncertain if the man was a local resident or a visitor to the area. No missing person reports have been filed.

“Detectives will rely on the coroner and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to determine the cause of death,” according to the GSPD Facebook post.
