Foley High School is proud to announce the appointment of Merritt Bowden as the school’s Head Baseball Coach. Bowden is a familiar face at Foley having served as an assistant football coach for the Foley Lions before taking a coaching position with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, part of the Canadian Football League. Principal Russ Moore said, “We are very pleased to welcome Coach Bowden back to the Foley family and are confident that we’ve hit a home run with his appointment in this role.”

While he has an extensive background as a football coach, Bowden says he is thrilled about the opportunity to return to his first love of baseball. He said, “This was my first sport and where my roots are as a coach. I am very excited about the opportunity to continue the program’s commitment to excellence and am committed to helping our students grow as athletes and as young men.”

Bowden was an All-American baseball player for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks from 1988-1991, a member of two NCAA Division II National Championship teams, and a starter in four consecutive NCAA World Series. He played outfield for the Elizabethton Twins, the minor league affiliate for the Minnesota Twins, from 1991-1992 and then for the Montgomery Wings in 2001. A former associate scout for the Atlanta Braves, Bowden served as the manager of the Selma Cloverleafs in 2002 and was selected as the Manager of the Year for the Southeastern League of Professional Baseball.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity for our student-athletes to work with Coach Bowden,” said Moore. “He is a first-class individual and motivator, and his baseball background and pedigree is amazing. Baseball is important to our community, and we look forward to watching Coach Bowden and the boys build their program over the next several years.”
