ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — “Get your kicks, on Route 66.”

The iconic highway, also known as Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America, and the Mother Road, recently celebrated the 90th anniversary of its completion and while it was officially removed from the U.S. Highway System in 1985, many of its iconic roadside attractions remain and millions still flock to explore the 2,448-mile stretch of highway from Chicago to Los Angeles.

“We’ve always talked about doing a road trip,” said George P. Thames Adult Activity Center Director Sarah Duncan. “Maybe this is the next best thing.”

On Thursday, Sept. 20, Duncan invites adults ages 50 and over to come enjoy music, good food and fellowship and get a bit of a history lesson on the coast-to-coast stretch of road still known by many as Route 66.

Beginning at 11 a.m., there will be a video presentation exploring the historic highway. Anyone who has traveled the route are also welcome to bring photographs and share stories of their experiences. Those wishing to are also encouraged to dress to match the era when the highway was most popular.

Following the program, the Route 66 Diner will be open, and participants will be able to order from a menu of classic diner fare, prepared by Adult Activity Center volunteers.

After the meal, stick around for karaoke and anyone who brings an “overnight bag” which can be nothing more than a tooth brush, will be eligible for door prizes.

“This is just something fun we can do together,” Duncan said, “and who knows, there may be some other surprises in store.”

The George P. Thames Adult Activity Center, located at 22651 E. Chicago St. in Robertsdale, hosts daily, weekly and monthly events for adults over the age of 50.
