ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale High School varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads hosted a camp last week with the city of Robertsdale at the PZK Hall.

Nearly 60 campers, ages 4 to 9, signed up with more than 40 in attendance on Tuesday, June 11, said Amanda Givens, RHS varsity cheer coach.

The program included instruction in motion techniques, jumps, dance, cheers, chants, band dance and stunting.

Cheerleaders will once again host a mini-camp, this year on July 30-Aug. 1 in the gym at Robertsdale High School Cost is $40 per camper, which includes a T-shirt, Givens said.

Every year for the past several years before the first home game young residents from age 5 get the opportunity to join the cheerleaders on the field during pre-game festivities at J.D. Sellars Stadium, first participating in a camp at Robertsdale Elementary School. For the past few years, the camp was moved to the PZK Hall in Robertsdale.

The Golden Bears will open up at home this year against the Vikings of Mary G. Montgomery on Aug. 23. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Proceeds from the mini-camp also help pay expenses for the cheerleading squad to attend this year’s state camp in hopes of attending the National Cheerleading Finals in Orlando. Last year’s squad fell just short, finishing fourth at the state competition. Additional fundraisers throughout the year help pay for day-to-day expenses for the cheerleading squads.

Registration forms and information are available at the school and will be also be available on the school’s website, bcbe.org/rhs. For more information about the camp, contact Givens at agivens@bcbe.org or call Robertsdale High School, 251-947-4154.
