Teachers provide lunch on the go in Silverhill

SILVERHILL, Alabama — Amid the threat of COVID-19, students will not be returning to regular classes to finish out the 2019-20 school year. With spring break scheduled to begin Monday, April 6 teachers in Baldwin County are waiting to hear how they will finish the year with online classes.

In the meantime, some local teachers have found another way to help their students.

Sarah Turner is a sixth-grade teacher at Silverhill Elementary School. Her husband Matt owns Top of the Bay restaurant in Daphne.

While the restaurant is open now for online pickup and delivery only, the Turners decided to prepare sack lunches for local students. On Thursday, March 26, Sarah Turner and her fellow teachers handed out 100 meals to students.

On April 2, she was joined by fellow teachers Mary Claire Sharp, Haley Foley and Lauree Johnson, along with Johnson’s daughter, Jordan, who is home from college after regular classes were suspended during the outbreak.

“We want to do this as long as they will let us,” Turner said.

Meals were handed out from 11 a.m. to noon on April 2. A specific time for the next meal pickup will be posted on the town of Silverhill Facebook page.
