FOLEY – A controversial figure of the Old West, Dr. John Henry Holliday - better known as “Doc Holliday - began his life in Georgia in 1851. He trained as a dentist before heading to the West. He suffered personally and professionally because of tuberculosis, and often supported himself as a gambler and dealer at card tables before the disease claimed his life.

Holliday is perhaps best remembered for a brief moment that made history. He was one of the gunmen at the O.K. Corral shootout in Tombstone, Arizona, on October 26, 1881. The gunfight lasted less than a minute but it’s still remembered and frequently re-enacted more than 130 years later.

Crestview dentist Dr. Richard Thomas is an expert on Doc Holliday and a collector of memorabilia connected to him. Expect an enthusiastic presentation with an opportunity to see pieces from Dr. Thomas’ extensive collection.

The presentation is part of the program at the society’s monthly meeting at the Foley Public Library. Meetings are free and open to the public. Following the presentation, guests are invited to join society members for light refreshments and discussion of research tips and brick walls.
