• Admirals hosting volleyball jamboree Saturday
DAPHNE—Volleyball players are putting some final polish on their serving, setting and spiking while hitting the court in preparation for the 2014 season. Bayside Academy is hosting a preseason jamboree tomorrow in Daphne.
Bayside head coach Ann Schilling said the event also give officials a chance to dust off their whistles and rulebooks.
“It’s something that’s good for all of us, players, coaches and the officials,” she said. “We have been hosting it for a while now.”
Schilling’s 2014 team is the 12-time defending state champion in Class 3A and Class 2A with consecutive championship titles over both classifications.
The Lady Admirals lost five seniors last year to graduation and has starters returning this year in junior Julia Martin and sophomores Lauren Chastang and Ariel Dulaney.
“We have some players ready to step up and step in,” Schilling said. “We had a good group the last few years but eventually they all move on. This bunch is coming together. We’re not very tall across the net, but we’re use to that. Defense will have to step up for us and make every point count. Of course, there’s always room for improvement and we’ll keep working on that all year. You never stop working on getting better.”
Bayside has 20 Alabama High School Athletic Association state titles in volleyball. Schilling has directed the Lady Ads to 17 of those. Her players were first graders when the current streak began. Returning to assist her are assistants and former Bayside state champions Brenda Sirmon Allen and Lauren Reibe as well as former Dirty Dozen standout and two-time NCAA All-American hitter at LSU Monique Adams.
Bayside opens on the road at Adams’ and Schilling's alma mater and now super inter-class rival 7A McGill-Toolen Catholic Aug. 28.
