Baldwin County High School inducts 2021 Hall of Fame class

BAY MINETTE — Baldwin County High School Alumni Association inducted the newest members into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Class of 2021 were inducted in pre-game activities Sept. 17 and include: Jonathan “Joe” Williams (1993); Brooke Lovett Lenz (1997); Richard Michael Mason (1998); Ellery Boykin (2001), Lafarrah Crook Chambers (2002); and Thomas “Jason” Hadley (2003). Associate members are Tina Chambless Covington and R.L. Watson.

 Jonathan “Joe’ Williams graduated in 1993, lettering in football, basketball, and track. He was the first B.C.H.S. football player to be invited to the Alabama/Mississippi Shrine game.

At BCHS, he was selected multiple times as Player of the Week; lettered three years in football, basketball and track; senior class vice-president; junior class favorite; and most industrious in geometry.

Williams signed with Auburn University but transferred to Southern University. He finished college with the highest accolades being named a National Scholar Athlete; a member of the SWAC All-American Team; with three national championships; and voted team captain. After college, he played in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams as a defensive lineman.

In 2002, he and his wife Dr. Sheletta Williams established the Garden of Eden Christian Academy. Presently, he is the South Alabama franchise owner for Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steak Burgers. Williams and his college sweetheart have three children, and he is an ordained elder at Fresh Revelation Church in Stockton.

Brooke Lovett Lenz graduated in 1997, lettering in track and field, tennis and cheerleading. She earned five letters at BCHS In track and field, she was an All-county selection and she participated at the state level. At BCHS, she was co-captain of the cheerleading team, president of the National Honor Society, received the Good Citizenship Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution, attended Girl’s State, a Key Club favorite, Miss BCHS, charter member of the American Technology Honor Society, and valedictorian of the Class of 1997.

She attended the University of Mobile where she was a cheerleader for three years. Lenz attended the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. In 2010-2011, she was chief resident for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She was awarded “Best Resident” in eight areas of training.

She was elected Chief of Staff of Springhill Medical Center and served as the youngest in the history of the hospital. She served on the Board of the Women’s Resource Center for five years, and the Springhill Medical Center Board of Directors.

She is a member of the Junior League of Mobile, Mobile Bay ObGyn Society, and Real Talk for women annual speaker. Lenz and her husband, Michael reside in Mobile. They have three children.

Richard Michael Mason graduated in 1998, lettering in four sports, football, basketball, track and soccer. During his 1995-96 football season, he was selected as Defensive Player of the Year, received the Headhunter Award, was an All-County and All-Area selection and was leading tackler. In 1996-97, he was Defensive Player of the Year, team captain, Most Valuable Player, All-County and All-Area selection, received the Headhunter Award, and was leading tackler. In 1997-98, he was team captain, Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, All-County, All-Area, and All-State selection, received the Headhunter Award, and was leading tackler.

After high school, he received a football scholarship to Troy State University. Presently, he is a Birmingham police officer. Mason and his wife, Kenosha reside in Helena. They have one child.

Ellery Boykin graduated in 2001, and was a two-sport letterman, lettering in basketball and baseball. In basketball, he was an All-county selection. He was a leader and standout player on the 2001 basketball team that played in the AHSAA Final Four. At BCHS, he was Mr. BCHS, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the marching band, and captain of the concert band.

After high school, he played basketball at Florida Southern College. His current occupation is an insurance underwriter and has been awarded Associate of the Month and section lead. Boykin resides in Mulberry, Fla.

Lafarrah Crook Chambers graduated in 2002, and was a two-sport letterman, lettering six years in softball and two years in track. In softball, she was a member of the 2000 and 2001 North/South All-Star team; a three-year All-County selection; 2001 Mobile Register Super 12 team: and was 2002 BCHS Base Stealer of the Year. She was a member of the Who’s Who Among High School Students, the Student Council, the French Club, a varsity cheerleader for three years, and graduated with honors with a 3.85 G.P.A.

After high school, she signed with Bishop State Community College to play softball. At Bishop State, she had 157 stolen bases, was selected as Player of the Year with a .310 batting average, selected as an NJCAA All-American second team, and she graduated with an associated degree in science. She also graduated from Fortis College for Medical Assisting in X-rays/EKG and Phlebotomy with a 4.0 G.P.A.

Presently, she is employed with the U.S. Government Postal Service and an owner of Farrah’s Hobbies. She and her husband, Jonathan reside in Bay Minette. They have four children.

Thomas “Jason” Hadley graduated in 2003, he played two years of basketball and four years of baseball. In baseball, he was a 2002 and 2003 All-County selection, a 2002 and 2003 Mobile Press Register Deadly Diamond selection, and a Mobile Register Player of the week. In 2003, he was selected to play in the East/West Baseball All-Star game, a first team 6A Baseball All-State selection and 6A first team Academic All-State selection.

At B.C.H.S, he was a member of the National Honor Society, received the English Merit Award, a member of the Key Club, and attended the Alabama Governor’s School at Samford University.

After high school, he was a four-year starter in baseball at Millsaps College. At Millsaps College, he received the Paul Benton Award for Athletic and Academic Achievement; voted to the Sothern Collegiate Athletic Conference All Conference team for four years; and All-Region in 2007.

After graduation, he held all-time career records for Millsaps in hits, doubles, runs scored, walks, games played, at bats, average runs per game and average walks per game. He also held records for the NCAA Division III baseball for his career.

Upon graduation from Millsaps College, he attended Mississippi College School of Law, graduating in 2010 and is licensed to practice law in the state of Alabama and Mississippi.

Presently, he operates the Hadley Law Firm and is co-owner of Sports Innovation, which patents and develops baseball and softball hitting equipment and sales worldwide.

Hadley and his wife, Jaynie reside in Perdido. They have two children.

Tina Chambless Covington was selected as an associate member of the BCHS Athletic Hall of Fame. Covington is a proud member of the 1988 graduating class of BCHS where she served as a class officer, Interact Favorite and Class Favorite.

Though she was never a cheerleader in high school, she has been a big cheerleader for the Tigers since. In the years since graduation, Covington can usually be found in the stands or on the sidelines documenting all the positive events taking place at BCHS.

She has taken and shared thousands of photographs of school sporting events, senior recognitions, pep rallies, graduations, honor society and various school functions – including the annual Athletic Hall of Fame inductions.

Both of her children, Morgan and Matthew, attended Bay Minette schools and followed in their mom’s footsteps to graduate from BCHS. During their tenure, Covington served as officer of the BCHS Band Boosters, as well as played an active role in supporting cross country and soccer teams.

She has also been an ardent supporter of school athletics and enrichment programs. She is a founding member of the Tiger for Life alumni association which has raised thousands of dollars for the school. She also helped create the #PlayLikeALadyTiger campaign to promote female student leaders and athletes.

She has worked with school administration and coaches to coordinate the annual Drawdown which benefits school athletics and enrichment programs. In recent years, she  spearheaded fundraisers to purchase new uniforms for track, volleyball and basketball teams.

She has also served on several school advisory committees in support of BCHS and is always willing to lend a helping hand where needed.

She is married to Neal Covington, and she is proud to note that he has converted into a big Tiger fan as well.

R.L. Watson was selected as an associate member of the BCHS Athletic Hall of Fame. Watson graduated from Vigor High School in 1965, where he played football, basketball, and baseball.

He received an athletic scholarship to attend Livingston University. At Livingston, he played football and baseball and earned his Bachelors’ degree. He also earned his Masters’ degree from the University of South Alabama and an educational specialist degree from Alabama State University.

Watson was a teacher, head football coach and athletic director at BCHS. His football teams were 38-12 in the regular season for the five years from 1988-1993. They were area runner-up in his first year and area champions the next four years in a row, with an undefeated season his second year.

In 2008, Watson was inducted into the Baldwin County Varsity Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 2015, he was selected for the AHSAA Lifetime Achievement Award for Education including teaching, coaching, and administration. He had 47 years in education.

We were saddened by the passing of Watson in August. He is survived by his wife Lynda, and three children and four grandchildren.
