Baldwin County Schools Closed Monday

Posted

Baldwin County School Superintendent just announced that schools will be closed Monday. Here is the email message he sent parents:

In line with Baldwin County and other government operations, Baldwin County Public Schools will be closed Monday, August 30th. This includes central office, all school facilities, after-school care and all extracurricular activities. We expect school to resume on Tuesday, August 31, but will make an announcement Monday if that changes.

Our concern is flooding and a possible two-to-four-foot storm surge projected by the National Weather Service. They are expecting up to a half-foot of rain in some areas of Baldwin County depending on the speed of the storm. We've already had a significant amount of rainfall in our area this month and it will not take much for flooding to occur. All of this combined with an overnight, early morning arrival creates significant difficulties for our transportation department to travel in and around low-lying and waterfront areas.

We could take a wait-and-see approach, but I fear any further delay will make it more difficult for parents and businesses to make adjustments so we are making this decision now. Again, I expect we will be open and back to our normal schedule on Tuesday.

Please take the necessary precautions going into tomorrow and Monday. Thank you all and stay safe.
